Many people ask me, "Lynne, how did you come up with this story?"
It wasn't ME that came up with the story. Allow me to tell you a little more...
In 2004, my job was raising my children, who were 9 and 12 at the time. I had developed a habit of spending time each morning, real early, before anyone in the house was awake, reading God's Word and praying to the Lord. One day, the Holy Spirit gave me a really wild idea: wouldn't it be great if someone could write a story that would be read by children AND adults that would lead people to want to find out more about Jesus? Then God made sure I knew that it was ME who was supposed to write this story. "ME?" I questioned (more than once, I must admit). "I am not a professional writer. I know nothing about writing a book. God, I am not the one You want to do this." Honestly, that was my first response to what God was calling me to do.
A few weeks later, God gave me the ending to the story. That was it, just the ending, and I envisioned beautiful artwork that would accompany this amazing ending, an ending of hope, an ending that is really a beginning. It was then that I decided that if God wanted me to do this to honor and glorify Him, I would not continue to refuse His calling. I decided I wanted to be part of it!
Writing this book was the hardest thing I have ever done, but it became for me an exercise in being obedient to God's lead, step by tiny step. Through it, I have learned so much about myself and about the God I serve. A mere 8 years later, the Spokesville story has finally been told, and I am so thankful to be part of it!
God says in His Word that He can do "immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20), and this book is a confirmation of that truth. The illustrator of this story is Kathy Dache', a good friend and sister in Christ, who, through God's direction, put more beauty into expressing these ideas than I could ever have imagined. I also had the privilege of working with another friend, Amy Ferrara, who encouraged me greatly while she edited (and edited and edited) my work. All through the process of developing this book, God gave me people to love and support my efforts. He gave me the wisdom, only as I could receive it. See, I didn't need to be a professional writer at all. I just needed to have a willing heart. God provided me everything I needed every step of the way.
I encourage you to consider your own calling. What is the Lord asking you to do to further His Kingdom? If you are saying, "I can't do that!", ask Him to soften your heart so that you can be part of His work. You will truly be blessed by your obedience.
I am excited to share "Bennie's Forever Gift" with you. Jump on and enjoy the ride through the wonderful world of Spokesville!
